Call to Action

On May 21, 2025, the Governor of Washington signed into law the largest tax increase in our state’s history. Several components of this legislation will have an immediate impact on Anacortes residents -most notably, a 6-cent tax increase per gallon on gas and a 12-cent tax increase per gallon  on diesel. effective, July,1, 2025.  These tax increases  will drive up transportation and delivery costs for all products and services.

A more significant and longer-term concern involves local property taxes, particularly those used to fund school levies.

House Bill 2049 – A Property Tax Increase:

House Bill 2049, effective July 27, 2025, dramatically expands the revenue levels for urban school districts.  Under previous law, districts could only raise enrichment levies by 1% above inflation annually.  The new law increases that threshold to allow an additional $500 per student inflation enhancement in 2026, followed by annual increases of 3.3% from 2027 through 2030.

This change will lead to substantial increases in local property taxes – and Anacortes residents will feel the impact.
